New Media Coordinator Arrives @ SL

Hello. My name is Mrs. Cahoon and I am your new media coordinator (librarian). Due to Mrs. Hill’s resignation, I am coming to you by transfer from Kinston High. I look forward to seeing many of you in the library and I hope that I can be of service to you in many different ways. Throughout the remainder of the 2008-2009 school year, it is my wish that we can get to know one another and that we can work together to see some great end results.

As I mentioned earlier, I am transferring from another high school. I have spent the past 14 years serving either patrons in the public library setting or students in a school setting. I have worked with students in both the elementary as well as the high school setting. I have taught in the classroom at the elementary level, as well. I am an East Carolina University graduate with a Master’s Degree in Library Science (Mrs. Hill and I graduated side-by-side).

I am married to Gene Cahoon and we have two children, Ethan (6) and Anya (5). I am a life-long resident of Lenoir County and currently reside on the family farm in northern Lenoir County.

Please stop by and introduce yourself, if you haven’t already done so. It will take me a while to learn the names of South Lenoir’s students and staff, but I will eventually conquer that. I am here to help you in whatever way I can. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance. I will do my best to accomodate your need.

Dear Students and Teachers of South Lenoir,

It has been my pleasure being your librarian for the past 10 and a half years. I have learned so much from all of you: I leave a much wiser librarian than when I began in 1998.

There is no way to operate an effective, efficient library without the support and help of the students, teachers and staff; fortunately, I have had both from so many of you. I look forward to hearing about your future accomplishments: I know they will be vast.

Podcasting with Mr. Plowman

Mr. Plowman’s third period Earth Science class has spent the past week researching energy consumption in the Lenoir County Public Schools. Each group of students is attacking a specific energy-monster in the school system, issues such as lighting and heating/air. Their energy efficient solutions range from geo-themal heating and cooling to solar panels. After researching their topics, students plan on several activities to help make the school system less of an energy consumer. If all goes well, they hope to present their findings to the Lenoir County Board of Education.

This class is the first class at South Lenoir to podcast using the online program Gabcast. After writing their scripts, they recorded their podcast via their cellphones. Their recordings were uploaded directly into Gabcast. New book order just placed!

Yesterday I placed an order for 35 new books and 20 new AR quizzes. The titles are many that you have asked for such as the graphic novel series Fruits Basket, Vol. 1-9, and one of the Darren Shan books we were missing, Slawter, and Savage by David Almond. The quizzes are primarily for the new titles I have ordered and for some of the books we already have but had no AR tests for.

Keep checking in with us; I’ll let you know as soon as the new books and tests arrive.
