Library assistants are invaluable to the efficient operation of the media center. In order to become a library assistant you must fill out an application and ask three of your teachers to complete a recommendation form. The application and the recommendation form are included below. Assistants are chosen in the spring during the registration process, but you may apply at any time during the school year for the next school year. Turn in completed applications to Mrs. Cahoon in the library.
Students who make the best library assistants are independent, self-reliant, responsible, honest and motivated to learn. In addition to assisting the librarians, students and teachers, assistants complete a course in library science designed to teach them about the resources of the school library and the principles of librarianship. Students enrolled in the course will complete an ongoing project, an electronic portfolio which highlights their accomplishments during the course and their contributions to the library media center program. Students will have assignments to complete, some of which will require work out of class. Many of the assignments incorporate the latest technology and help students to learn more about Web 2.0 applications. The type of duties that assistants will be asked to complete will vary widely from day to day and will include shelving books, trouble shooting equipment, dusting, teaching students to use OPAC, delivering equipment to teachers, etc.
Good library assistants can achieve positions of great responsibility and trust; they become valued members of the South Lenoir family of students, teachers and certainly the librarians. Experienced library assistants are allowed to take a second year of library science, which is an elective course, with my approval.
I hope you will consider becoming a library assistant. If you have questions about the course, please see me and I’ll try to answer your questions.
